Terra a Terra Reserva 2012, Douro, Portugal
£9.99 per bottle (£59.94 per case of 6)
Made from a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo in Spain). Showing complex fruity aromas of blackberry, black plum, cedar and spices. On the palate is long and elegant with an intense and complex texture. Capped off with a fruity and persistent finish. A great weekday wine, and a superb value at this price. 13.5% abv.
Pair with: Braised lamb shoulder or Lancashire Hotpot.
Quinta do Vallado 2013, Douro, Portugal
£10.50 per bottle (£63.00 per case of 6)
Douro reds are commanding higher and higher prices these days, but here's a beauty that's just perfect for everyday drinking; and this Vallado couldn't be more easy-going. Busting with blueberry, cherries and jam, with supple, fully integrated tannins, this is as versatile as a Cru Beaujolais or a top-notch Chianti (just better value), so this really is one to enjoy on a Wednesday night in if red is your thing. 13.5% abv.
Pair with: Venison, cassoulet or pan-fried duck breasts.
Pêra-Grave 2012, Alentejo, Portugal
£12.95 per bottle (£77.70 per case of 6)
This wine is both a superb discovery and an International Wine Challenge medal winner. Ripe black fruit, roasted coffee and mocha with great complexity. The wine evolves into great complexity given by the time spent in oak. Tannins are soft, giving a velvety body, with a long, elegant, and persistent finish. A stunning wine for the price. 14.0% abv.
Pair with: Roasted game and and spicy red meats.
Vertice Grande Reserva Tinto, Douro, Portugal 2010
£13.99 per bottle (£83.94 per case of 6)
Made from a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz (aka Tempranillo in Spain) and aged for 18 months in New French Oak. On the nose this had a rich, heady stew of black fruits, spices and smoke. Medium to full bodied with smooth tannins and all packaged neatly in the typical Douro style. This is about as good value as Grande Reserva gets, we seriously recommend you test drive this baby while we have it! 14% abv.
Pair with: Roasted lamb or barbecued ribeye.
Quinta de S. José Touriga Nacional 2013, Douro, Portugal
£19.50 per bottle (£117.00 per case of 6)
This 100% Touriga Nacional is our favourite example of the classic Portuguese varietal used in Port wine and recent winner of Mark Squires' Best of 2013 on Wine Advocate. Deep purple in colour. Very complex and distinct flavours, where the typical fruity and floral nature of the variety predominates, followed by spicy notes coming from the wood. The palate shows fruit, complexity, great balance and harmony with some robust, age-worthy tannins and complimented by a long finish. A superb effort by João Brito e Cunha. 14.0% abv.
Pair with: Barbequed lamb or sirloin.
Quanta Terra Grande Reserva 2011, Douro, Portugal
£17.99 per bottle (£127.94 per case of 6)
Aged for 12 months in new French Oak this wine has the most seductive nose. Gorgeously ripe and rich, this powerful wine has a dark structure and layer after layer of juicy black fruits. It’s still young and the mineral side of the wine is still showing, but its future is looking good with well integrated yet firm tannins and an impeccable structure of fruit. One to enjoy now and for 8+ years. 14% abv.
Pair with: Roasted beef or lamb.
Karner Gábor Vitezfold 2008, Kékfrankos, Hungary
£19.50 per bottle (£117.00 per case of 6)
Now this is an interesting wine, and perfect for those after something a little different. Pitched somewhere between a Burgundy with a little age behind it, or an even older Languedoc wine, this seriously impresses after a couple of hours in the decanter. Very concentrated and precise with highly-toned Autumnal berries, a hint of oak spice and razor sharp acid to provide the perfect balance that makes this wine so superb. For those that take the risk on a little known wine from a smaller wine producing country, you will be rewarded.
Pair with: Beef fillet or roasted game.
Chateau Musar 1999, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon **SOLD OUT**
£24.50 per bottle (£147.00 per case of 6)
This wine is the perfect replacement for middle-range, boring Villages burgundy. It is the finest of recent vintages of Musar (and believe me, we have been through a few to find the best) and is right at its peak now. It’s almost brow-furrowingly intricate, with blueberries, damsons, spice, ink, smoke and cocoa all milling around on nose and palate. Weighty with a hint of spice, savour leather, red jammy notes, and trademark noted of funk and barnyard.. Layer upon layer develop on the palate in satisfying waves until you realise this really is quite a unique wine- somewhere placed between Bordeaux and Burgundy, and would give either for twice the price a very good run for their money. Quite something.
Pair with: Ottolenghi style chicken and quinoa
