Terra a Terra Reserva Branco 2013, Douro, Portugal
£9.99 per bottle (£59.94 per case of 6)
Made with a blend of Gouvei0, Viosinho and Chardonnay. Simple in style, the Terra a Terra Reserve will pleasantly surprise you with its agility and freshness. The nose shows crisp citrus fruit with some tropical fruit and floral notes. On the palate it shows great underlying minerality and some harmoniously integrated wood, with a long fresh finish. The perfect wine for a hot Summer's day! 13.5% abv.
Pair with: Ice cold with fresh shellfish.
Toques et Clochers 'Autan' Chardonnay 2011, Limoux, France **SOLD OUT**
£11.95 per bottle (£71.70 per case of 6)
Discovered at one of Rick Stein's many restaurants in Cornwall it is hard to imagine a better wine to accompany an exclusive all-fish menu. Limoux, widely credited with inventing Champagne before Champagne, has managed to yield a wine that drinks more like a Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne that a little known number from the Languedoc. A creamy nose filled with buttery, toasty notes and rounded body with some heady citrus notes is also very precise and pairable with just about any food. Very very drinkable and a firm favourite here at HQ. 13.0% abv.
Pair with: Monkfish, rock oysters or ceviche.
CARM Reserva 2014, Douro, Portugal
£12.60 per bottle (£75.60 per case of 6)
This is a very fresh and complex wine, with plenty of citrus and grapefruit in harmony with discreet floral nuances and strong minerality reflecting the terroir from which it comes. The body further develops with notes of vanilla and toast provided from the time spent in oak barrels. An enticing mouthfeel gives way to a long, cool and precise finish. A delightful everyday wine. 13.0% abv.
Pair with: Roast chicken or carbonara.
Vértice Grande Reserva 2012, Douro, Portugal
£12.95 per bottle (£77.70 per case of 6)
A phenomenal wine, one that we like to think of as our flagship (and not just because it's got a 'V' on the bottle, though this helped). Golden in colour and a rich, decadent nose with toasted notes gives way to hints of ripe fruit on the palate. Perfect poise and structure and voluminous, buttery fruit continues all the way to a dry and persistent finish. This wine is out of this world and a fraction of the price of a similar quality white Burgundy. One to fill the cellar with we feel. 13.5% abv.
Pair with: Lobster, poached salmon with caper-butter sauce or baked oysters.
Quanta Terra Grande Reserva 2013, Douro, Portugal
£13.20 per bottle (£79.20 per case of 6)
The second thoroughbred white from the Vertice stable and recently a Silver medal winner at the International Wine Challenge. Golden in colour and with delicate vanilla notes from time in oak, layers of apple and pear, a hint of pineapple and some captivating nuttiness. This wine can be aged for years to come hinting at the complexity its celestial producers have managed to impart. Produced from Viosinho and Gouveio varieties and akin to some of the more interesting offerings from Burgundy, this is a real winner. 12.5% abv.
Pair with: Grilled fish, grilled vegetables or pasta.
Quinta de S. José Flor de S. José 2014, Douro, Portugal
£13.50 per bottle (£81.00 per case of 6)
Our favourite white from the Q. de S. José stable. Citrus in color, the wine shows up initially very discreet and complex with fresh and floral notes evolving for some minerals, more discreet and elegant notes. In the mouth is fresh with very balanced and present acidity. Thin, very elegant and complex, shows an excellent balance between alcohol, acidity and fruit, and a very thin and very long finish. Gold medal winner at the Portugal Wine Trophy in 2014 and International Trophy winner at the IWC.
Pair with: Grilled fish and vegetables, or creamy risotto.
Domaine Talmard Macon Uchizy 2014, Macon, France
£14.40 per bottle (£86.40 per case of 6)
A classic Chardonnay that's well-balanced and nicely priced; the best example of affordable white burgundy we've found. It even won a Gold Medal at the 2014 Concours Général Agricole in Paris so we must be right. Made in the traditional style with just a small amount of oak, and lots of lush green apple notes. Finishes with a citrus lift and bright orchard fruit. Perfect for Tuesday nights in. 13.0% abv.
Pair with: Dover sole, roasted chicken or seafood linguini.
Domaine Fouassier Sancerre 'Les Chasseignes' 2013, Loire, France **SOLD OUT**
£15.95 per bottle (£95.70 per case of 6)
This Sancerre is in a class of its own. Sourced from an 100% certified organic and biodynamic, estate-owned single-vineyard. Fresh, with meyer lemon and key lime aromas. Clean acidity, ripe, with plenty of depth and layered with lemon curd, star fruit and gooseberry notes, followed by a stony mouthwatering finish. Long and wonderfully complex. One for special occasions. 13.1% abv.
Pair with: Oysters, oysters and oysters. And grilled fish and vegetables.
Filipa Pato Calcario Nossa 2014, Beiras, Portugal
£20.50 per bottle (£123.00 per case of 6)
This is definitely one of our most interesting discoveries this year. Made from 100% Bical from stony clay over chalky subsoil it has a creamy nose, with discernible structure – a ripple of muscle beneath – not giving too much away. On the palate it is textured and creamy, muscular yet light with subtle, scented white peach, some almonds and a hint of smoke. A beautifully balanced, very complete wine which will keep drawing you back to the glass (and bottle!) time and again. Outstanding. 12.5% abv.
Pair with: Lobster or monkfish thai green curry.
Chateau Musar Blanc 2006, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon **SOLD OUT**
£20.50 per bottle (£123.00 per case of 6)
The Chateau Musar Blanc is about as enthralling as you'd expect given the notoriety of their reds. This distinctive, full-bodied wine is made from 100% Merwah, a Lebanese varietal, in a profound and compelling oxidative style that has aficionados swilling and sniffing like something is seriously amiss. Think of a three-way cross between sherry, aged Rioja and amphorae-aged wines from the Republic of Georgia. Subtle oak, with some mineral and saline flavours and a long persistent finish. We guarantee this will be one of the most memorable wines you have ever tasted. 12.5% abv.
Pair with: Pan-fried foie gras or smoked fish.
Glenwood Vignerons Selection Chardonnay 2011, Franschhoek, South Africa
£21.50 per bottle (£129.00 per case of 6)
How many awards must a wine win until we start to pay attention? In this case, too many. Having scooped the Best South African Chardonnay - Decanter Wine Awards (two years running), National Chardonnay Champion - Terroir Wine Awards, and Best White Wine Trophy - Winemakers Choice and even held its place at the top of the South African Airways First Class wine list for some time we finally join the party and realise what a stunning effort this is. Outstanding oak and fruit integration with a full, rich, creamy mouthfeel of almonds and vanilla and a lingering aftertaste of smoky peach and citrus. A fierce rival for any 1er Cru Meursault from any good producer, this really is one for those looking for an alternative to high-end Burgundy. 14.8% abv.
Pair with: Ideally, nothing. This wine should really be enjoyed on its own as the food won't get a look in!
