Surrender the Summer and embrace Grenache

autumn autumn wines grenache wine that goes with spicy food

If the weather this week is anything to go by, we can safely say that Autumn is well and truly here, which actually excites us because it provides our cue for embracing some other styles of wine. Enter Grenache, the grape behind some of the most legendary wines from the Rhône, Northern Spain and California. Grenache-based wines are ideal for Autumn; forming the perfect bridge between fruitier summer reds and the heavier, supercharged styles that we largely save for winter. And of course, if you are not ready to fully relinquish that Summer feel, then all you have to do is serve the wine slightly chilled.

Here are some of our favourite Grenache-led wines available today from our stores in London.

Cote du Roussillon Rouge 2014, Domaine Paul Meunier £36.50

Winemakers Lucile and Paul Meunier hail from Burgundy and considering this is their first vintage, what they've managed to achieve in creating such a wonderful wine with low alcohol (12.5%) is seriously impressive. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and a little Carignan this wine hails from the Languedoc in Southern France. Juicy and complex, this wine is for those with a fondness of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Garnatxa, Viladellops, Penedes, Spain £13

Crafted from a blend of the best grapes from each harvest with a clear predominance of Garnacha Red, which is the grape best suited to the calcareous soils in the vineyard. This wine is extremely approachable and the perfect match for spicy food.

Secateurs Red 2013, Badenhorst, Coastal Region, South Africa £15

Adi Badenhorst is one of the most exciting young winemakers in South Africa. Made from a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Cinsault, Secateurs is the winemakers label that allows him to have a little fun. Fresher than many South African reds, this wine is made in a natural way. We love it.
